About Me
My name is Grace, and for the last six months, my life has felt like a suitcase that won't quite close: I moved to Germany. It was terrifying and exhilarating at the same time – like a bungee jump where the cord is already attached, but you still don't know which way you'll swing. I used to be surrounded by the noisy streets of my old hometown, familiar faces in my favourite cafés, and a language I could speak without thinking. Here, everything is different: the smells, the sounds, the unspoken rules, even the silence sounds German. But I'm learning. Every day I say "Guten Morgen" to the postman, read signs in the supermarket, and try not to panic when I hear those impossibly long compound words. I'm preparing for my studies – medicine has always been my calling – and now I'm memorising anatomical terms in German, feeling like a first-grader learning to read all over again. It's tough, but deep down I have this stubborn belief: I will make it
My Dream
My biggest dream is to become a paediatric surgeon. I want to stand in an operating room and give a second chance at life. But beyond that, I dream of something simpler: I want to feel at home here. I want to wake up one morning and realise that German no longer sounds like a code to crack, but like my own language. I want to have friends I can call at midnight, a favourite local bakery where they know my name, and the quiet confidence that I belong exactly where I am.
My Hobbies
When I have free time, I paint with watercolours. It's my form of meditation: when the brush touches wet paper, the colours bloom and spread on their own, creating unpredictable patterns. I paint the landscapes I see on my walks, the faces of people in the train, and sometimes my own dreams. I also love baking pies using my grandmother's old recipes – even though German flour behaves differently, I treat each attempt as a delicious experiment and write down the results in a thick notebook. And every morning, I go for a run along the river, listening to German podcasts – it helps my brain wake up and my tongue get used to the rhythm of new words.
On Relationships with People
Moving to a new country has taught me that relationships are not about convenience – they are about courage. Back home, I had a safety net of old friends who knew my history without explanation. Here, I have to start from zero, and that forces me to be vulnerable in ways I never expected. I've learned that true connection doesn't require a shared past; it requires presence. A smile from a neighbour, a patient explanation from a classmate, a shared laugh over a mispronounced word – these small moments are the real currency of human bonding. I used to think intimacy meant knowing everything about someone. Now I think it means being willing to show your imperfect, lost, trying-hard self and letting others do the same
On the Meaning of Life
Lately, I've been asking myself: what is the point of all this struggle? Why leave everything behind, learn a new alphabet of existence, just to end up in the same human body with the same fears? And I think the answer is growth. Meaning isn't a destination; it's the movement itself. It's in the awkward phone calls with my family where I pretend to be braver than I am. It's in the late-night study sessions when nothing makes sense, but I keep reading anyway. It's in choosing hope over safety, again and again. Life, I believe, is not about finding yourself – it's about creating yourself, piece by piece, in a language you're still learning to speak. And maybe that's exactly the point: we are all works in progress, and that is perfectly enough
